I am inspired by nature, particularly the motion, patterns and shapes of flora and fauna.  My work is an expression of that inspiration on paper.

To express the essence of natural subjects that interest me, I use strong lines, graphic shapes, negative space and textures.  Relief printmaking is the perfect media for my designs. Carving a block gives me an avenue to be precise in my design, yet the carving tools leave a particular texture when the block is printed.  And the manual printing process makes each print unique.

As an artist and art teacher, I have been fortunate to explore and experiment with a wide range of media and still do today.  But after 50+ years of art making, I’m still enthralled by the process of creating block prints.  I love the simple elegance of black and white, how I must think backwards with my designs and how I can sometimes add a bit of color by hand just for fun.

The process of printmaking is very traditional.  It has been in use for hundreds of years.  But new approaches, tools and materials provide ways to experiment and add to that long tradition.  I feel honored to keep that long tradition alive but also to adapt it for the future.
